Speaking in front of an audience can be a frightening, heart-pounding adventure. Luckily for Jim Davidson, he already knew a little something about heart-pounding adventure when he began his career as an inspirational speaker in 1990. As a climber, expedition leader, and endurance runner, Jim developed a willingness to persevere and take risks that has helped him succeed as an environmental geologist and entrepreneur.
Today, Jim is applying this experience in his work as a speaker and trainer with “Speaking of Adventure,” in Ft. Collins, Colorado. He speaks about 40 times a year and spends the rest of his time adventuring with his wife and children.
Jim is one of 25 speakers featured in Vol. 1 of 50 Interviews: Professional Speakers being released on 2/1/10.
Excerpt from the Finding Speaking Success:
Q. What do you attribute your success to? Did you have a mentor?
A. I attribute my success to prior business experience, because the speaking business is a business. There is marketing, follow-up, taxes, branding, administration – all those types of things. So it is a business and prior business experience really helped a lot. Also, I would say knowing what you believe in, what you want to do, and what kind of people you can help is also critical. It helps you know where you are going. I had a mentor in Leanne Thieman. She’s a more advanced speaker than me and she has been a great mentor to me over the years and remains so today.
