Jill Lublin learned about guerilla publicity and gaining more visibility when she worked in the music business. She has authored three books: Guerilla Publicity, which is in its second edition and now includes blogging and social networking, Networking Magic, and her newest book Get Noticed…Get Referrals: Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself.
A renowned public speaker for over ten years, she used speaking as a vehicle to create leads for her business. In addition to the books, Jill also offers A Crash Course in Publicity, a home study program and runs a consulting business. When Guerrilla Publicity came out, she decided she wanted to do publicity in a different way so she closed her PR agency and began consulting. She created A Crash Course in Publicity as an affordable way to give entrepreneurs tremendous value and benefit. As an expert in making things happen in simple organized ways, she has been able to support business owners, entrepreneurs, solo-preneurs, and other types of consultants. Jill has been in a long term relationship for over thirteen years and shares her wonderful house with three cats.
Q. What are the biggest mistakes you see new speakers make?
A. Number one is to count on it totally for revenue. I don’t think you should, so one thing I would recommend is having multiple streams of revenue. You’ll notice, I am a platform speaker, I have a crash course in publicity, I have a home study course, and I have a consulting program. That doesn’t even count the three books, which also count as revenue streams. So I actually have four revenue streams.
Q. What is the most difficult aspect of your career to keep under control? How do you stay balanced?
A. I don’t think ‘balanced’ is a word that should exist anymore. I’ve just stopped trying to create it. Sometimes I’m going to be very relaxed and I’m going to be on vacation, and other times I’m going to work my butt off. I just came back from nine days on the road where every day I was giving a speech, and two of those days I did a crash course in publicity. Here’s what I did, I took naps in the middle of the day, I slept until 9:00am, and I made sure that I was taking care of myself. That isn’t always easy on the road. I believe in taking care of myself so when I feel tired, I rest. I just say to my clients, “I’m sorry. Right now you are not going to get the best of me.” Usually they understand, and that’s a good thing.
